What was your project and how did INSIGHT support you in completing it?

My project involved a work-integrated learning placement, operating in a live research delivery environment. A key component of this placement was to collaborate with the North East Ambulance Service research paramedics and deliver activities in the prehospital setting. Alongside this, I attended developmental days with a research paramedic to gain insight into the roles and responsibilities of a research paramedic, and into how they plan, action, and record their research.  This flowed nicely into the conclusion of my INSIGHT internship, as I attended the EMS 999 Research conference, which highlighted some great achievements in prehospital research.

What did you learn from your internship?

Research Participation: The INSIGHT programme presented an excellent opportunity to work alongside research paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service. This allowed me to participate in ongoing research by recruiting participants for an ongoing trial. 

Research Protocol Planning: This involved a session introducing planning tools, such as GANTT charts for project management, and information on research governance, including the Health Research Authority (HRA), Research Ethics Committees (RECs), and the Integrated Research Application System (IRAS).

Reviewed ethical principles in paramedic research, covering:

  • Capacity, consent, confidentiality, and anonymity
  • Real-world ethical dilemmas and case studies
  • Data protection requirements and right to withdraw
  • Governance via HRA and IRAS

Personal growth and adaptability, such as building resilience, time management skills and self-motivation

What’s next for you? Has INSIGHT changed or shaped your mind about a career in research?

The INSIGHT programme has allowed me to identify areas of prehospital research relevant to future practice and of personal interest. I hope to develop and draft a protocol on paramedic mentoring.

I am now looking to explore paramedic research pathway opportunities, including NIHR-funded Master’s programmes and building a portfolio for future clinical academic careers.

What would you say to people who are considering applying?

If you are thinking about applying – just do it! The opportunities that this internship will provide will greatly consolidate any prior understanding of research you have undertaken. It is also a great chance to meet dedicated, knowledgeable individuals who can share valuable insights and highlight great opportunities within the research community.  It has been challenging committing the time alongside my university studies, but it has been 100% worth it.
