Public partnership
We are committed to embedding patient and public involvement into the core of our practices and to leading on innovative initiatives.
Meaningful patient and public involvement is vital to ensure that current and future health and care research meets the needs of patients and carers. We use the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) definitions of public involvement where research is carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public, rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them.
Our Public Partnership
Team
In 2024, we committed to PPI through collaboration and inclusion, with investment into dedicated roles in the core NHRP team.
Our Public Partnership
Oversight Committee
We also established the NHRP Public Partnership Oversight Committee, led by and comprising patient and public contributors from across our region.
Our Foundations are built on four workstreams:
1. Leading research inclusion initiatives
Together with patient and public contributors, people from our local communities and researchers, we will lead strategic research inclusion projects, fostering a culture of trust and inclusivity (to breakdown barriers experienced by communities often overlooked in research) and reduce health inequalities.
2. Developing cross-partner public partnership capacity
We will facilitate partnership work with Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) workforce across Newcastle Health Research Partnership to foster collaboration, strategic planning and align and implement efficient resource coordination.
3. Creating a dynamic public partnership training programme
In collaboration with Creating Connections, a regional PPIE network, we will launch a pioneering public partnership training programme to enhance the PPIE skills, confidence and capabilities of colleagues and patient/public contributors, ensuring our research meets public needs.
4. Exploring and availing of commercial opportunities
We will work with commercial partners to foster inclusive and meaningful patient and public involvement in more health research. We aim to drive innovation and investment in greater patient and public involvement through these commercial partnerships.
