What was your project and how did INSIGHT support you in completing it?

My project involved spending time with the NMAHP Research Team at Newcastle Trust, where I explored the Trust’s research capacity, ongoing research activity, and how research is embedded within clinical practice. Alongside this, I worked with Northumbria University under the supervision of Professor Barry Hill, contributing to the design and delivery of a mixed-methods research project.

The INSIGHT programme was instrumental in shaping and refining my research interests and connecting me with the right academic and clinical support. It provided protected time, mentorship, and funding, which allowed me to meaningfully engage with research activity, develop practical research skills, and complete my project to a high standard.

What did you learn from your internships?

The INSIGHT internship gave me hands-on exposure to the realities of clinical and academic research. I developed practical skills in research design, data collection, and critical appraisal, while also gaining insight into how research capacity is built within NHS organisations. A key takeaway was the value of collaboration — working across clinical and academic settings strengthened my confidence, expanded my professional network, and helped me understand how research can directly influence patient care and service development.

What’s next for you? Has INSIGHT changed or shaped your mind about a career in research?

INSIGHT has absolutely shaped my perspective on research as a viable and exciting career pathway. Before the internship, research felt somewhat abstract; now it feels tangible, achievable, and relevant to my clinical practice. Moving forward, I plan to pursue further postgraduate study and continue building my research portfolio, with the long-term aim of combining clinical work with research that improves patient outcomes.

What would you say to people who are considering applying?

If you are even remotely curious about research, I would strongly encourage you to apply.
