We are pleased to welcome Richard O’Neill to lead our next session in our PPIE training programme.
Session Information
The health of Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities is shaped by their unique ways of life, which has often involved frequent movement and encounters with both physical and perceived barriers to healthcare. More recently the often forced settlement due to legislation or poor health has created an extra layer of difficulty around access to health services.
To effectively engage with these communities, particularly in research, it is crucial to have a deep understanding of their history and culture. This knowledge is essential for building trust and ensuring that interactions are respectful, informed, and ultimately successful.
This input delivered by Richard O’Neill one of the leading advocates and trainers from the community gives a unique insight and practical ways to develop an improved approach to research with Gypsy Roma and Traveller people.
Session Aims:
- Enhance Understanding: Provide participants with a broad awareness and deeper understanding of Gypsy, Traveller, and Roma communities.
- Explore Historical Context: Offer insights into the rich history and traditions of these communities.
- Cultural Awareness: Foster an appreciation for the unique cultural norms and practices within these communities.
- Address Health Issues: Share information on historical and current health challenges faced by Gypsy, Traveller, and Roma communities.
- Improve Engagement: Equip participants with practical strategies to enhance communication and interactions with these communities, particularly in research contexts.
Programme Information
The training programme is open to staff and public contributors involved in health and care research, regardless of their role or the organisation they work for. The sessions will offer participants the opportunity to learn how to do PPIE and participation activities effectively within research.
There is no requirement to have any previous experience within PPIE. There are various training sessions available that are relevant to individual levels of PPIE and participation knowledge.
