Prof Dave Jones, OBE, NHRP Academy Director and Prof Niina Kolehmainen Deputy Director, will host this 1-hour online session on effective supervision of researchers on external grants.
NIHR are in the process of simplifying their fellowship application pathways. By simplifying the awards, but keeping the background-specific funding committees, the intention is to will the experience for applicants but maintain the level of funding and background-specific support that is currently available.
What does this mean for people supporting others to apply for fellowships?
We anticipate a transition period during which it will be even more important than before to get the framing of application right, so that each application is allocated to the funding panel where it is most likely to be successful. NHIP Academy will be able to provide latest intelligence and guidance on this, for as long as the applicant and their support team engage with the Academy team early (we recommend an absolutely minimum of 2 months before the intended deadline). We hope this information is helpful, and ask you to share this widely with all relevant colleagues.
What does this mean for people applying for fellowships?
With the simplification, you will likely find a simpler NIHR Academy website. You may also find one, consistent application form for all programmes at any given level (predoctoral, doctoral, postdoctoral). However, behind the simpler window, it is important to be aware that the different programme panels will remain. This means, applications will still be channelled to different panels, and it will be very important to be clear in your framing of the application to ensure it is allocated to the right panel (i.e. the panel best placed to judge your proposal). This means it will be very important you seek guidance on the framing several months before your application deadline. We recommend you start this by early involvement and engagement (e.g. NHIP Fellows Forums, Know Your Funder), and then seeks to engage with the relevant NHIP Academy pillar team as early as possible, to ensure there is enough time for appropriate support.
