NHIP Academy will hold an information session about NIHR Research Professorships, and we encourage anyone considering round 16 or future rounds to attend. The session will include an overview of the NIHR Research Professorship scheme from Prof Dave Jones, OBE and insights from current and previous NIHR Professorship holders, opportunity for Q&A and information on the Newcastle University internal selection process.
We expect the NIHR Research Professorship round 16 call will launch in September with a deadline early December 2025. Assuming eligibility is unchanged from previous rounds, organisations are limited on the number of nominations it can make. For details of the Newcastle University internal selection please email nhip.academy@ncl.ac.uk
NIHR Research Professorships are very prestigious awards for emerging leaders in the NIHR remit of early translational (experimental medicine), clinical and applied health research, and social care research. Each award consists of a package to support a professorship, including one doctoral and two post-doctoral appointments, research running costs, a travel fund, a leadership and development programme (including access to the NIHR Leadership Programme) – the opportunity to request a sabbatical and the basic salary costs of the individual (plus indirect costs, for the lead nominating body.
Competitive candidates will demonstrate a steep career trajectory over the last 5-10 years (taking in to account any relevant breaks in employment such as statutory leave), on course to becoming an outstanding research leader. It is acknowledged that different professions can be promoted to Chair level with different amounts of academic and clinical experience. To help address this and avoid potential disadvantage, applicants from a Health and Care Professional background (e.g. nurse, midwife, AHP, healthcare scientist, pharmacist, social care etc) can still apply if they have been in a Chair role for longer than 5 years (spending no more than 5 years at their current level of seniority still applies to all other levels e.g. Reader, Senior Lecturer etc).
NIHR will take in to account any relevant breaks in employment such as statutory leave, and will also consider personal circumstances that have impacted on career progression.
As a guide, please see eligibility criteria and application requirements detailed in the Round 15 call https://www.nihr.ac.uk/funding/nihr-research-professorships-round-15/97011
